Range Safety at Havant Rifle & Pistol Club
Safety is our first concern and must be observed at all times.
Although the 5.6mm (.22") bullet is small, it has a range of over 1.5 kilometers and can be lethal at long as well as short distance. Always handle a rifle with the care it deserves and remember:
- Never point a rifle at anyone, even in fun, whether loaded or unloaded.
- Never load a firearm except at the firing point and always keep it pointed down the range whilst you are shooting.
- Even on the firing point the rifle must not be loaded until the Range Officer has given the command to start shooting.
- When anyone is forward of the firing point, do not handle weapons or ammunition.
- Always wear ear defenders when in the vicinity of the firing point.
- Always ensure that the rifle is unloaded and the breech open before leaving the firing point. At Havant we use green (or red) breech flags as evidence that the breech is clear. Alternatively you can remove the bolt - but that's the way they get lost (or trodden on).
- When off the firing point never operate a rifle's action or leave it unattended before ascertaining that it is unloaded.
