Becoming a Member at
Havant Rifle & Pistol Club

Havant Rifle and Pistol Club and its ranges are approved by the Ministry of Defence and Hampshire Police. As an approved club, we are able to accept applications from people who do not hold a Firearms Certificate. As a responsible club, we make every effort to ensure that our members are fit and proper people to hold Firearms Certificates and our application procedure will necessarily involve some questions which will help us verify that.
We are obliged by law to inform the police of new applicants so that checks may be made on them.
A prospective member wishing to join us will not be able to handle firearms or air weapons on their first visit. New applicants will usually be able to handle firearms under supervision once these checks have been done. As checks are done by email, any problems are communicated by the police very quickly. If there is any problem, the club Secretary will telephone the applicant. Otherwise, all applicants can return to the club and shoot after a few days. On your first shooting visit, ask the duty range officer for a probationer's attendance form. Once this has been set up, ask the duty range officer to sign and date it on each visit. After three visits you will be asked to pay the enrolment fee (see below). Other than this, all members, probationary or full, pay a £2 range fee each visit to cover heating, lighting and targets.
After fourteen visits the probationary attendance form will be full, and is passed on to the Secretary for final processing. At this point the Secretary will write to the applicant's referee and arrange for the probationer's case to be added to the agenda for the next available committee meeting. Assuming a favourable reference has been received, the probationer should be voted a full member. The Secretary will then write to the member, including a membership card, asking for their first subscription and a couple of passport-sized photos for their ID card. The subscription should paid on the next visit to the club, when the membership card will be filled in. All future payements should be entered on this - bring it with you when you pay your subs each year.

It is a legal requirement that a parent or guardian remains with an under-16 child whilst they are on Club premises. For non-shooting parents this generally means sitting in the Clubroom whilst the child shoots their targets!

Competitive Shooting
No-one is forced to enter competitions, but as a competitive target shooting club, all members are expected to have a go. There are many competitions, and you will find your own level, competing against others of similar ability. A range officer or section captain will tell you how to go about this. However, shooting is different things to different people, and we all enjoy it in different ways.

If you are interested in joining Havant Rifle & Pistol Club, you may wish to download a PDF file of our Membership Application Form. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to see this file. It's free, so if you don't already have it, the link below will take you to Adobe's web site. Follow the on-screen instructions and close the window down when you have finished.

Print off both pages and fill in all necessary boxes. When you have done this, contact John Wilson, telephone 023 9226 4728, or email: jaycedubya@ukonline.co.uk to arrange a visit. As mentioned above, initially you will not be able to handle firearms, but on subsequent visits, provided the result of the checks is positive, you will be able to handle firearms under supervision.

Due to increased membership numbers and subsequent pressure on range use, we are asking new and probationary members to visit the club on Sunday mornings for their own session. This makes it easier for those wishing to shoot competition cards.

As mentioned above, when shooting, all members (prospective, probationary and full) pay a £2 range fee to cover targets, lighting and heating. Your first three visits will be free apart from this. All being well with the checks, you will be a probationary member, and will need to get your probationer's form signed by the range officer each time you shoot. On your third visit you will be asked to pay the Joining Fee to cover initial adminstration.

Opening Times
Opening times are Monday, Tuesday & Thursday 7.30pm - 10.30pm, but any two or more full members of the club may use the facility at any reasonable time. However, all members are reminded that shooting is NOT permitted between 2230 hours and 0600 hours.

Generally Monday evenings are for Light Sporting Rifle, air rifle and air pistol. Tuesday evenings are for prone 25 yards rimfire, and Thursday evenings are for air rifle and pistol. The outdoor ranges are used when these evenings are light enough - roughly mid-April to mid-September. New members may check with section captains or longer-serving members for the arrangements at weekends.

On such occasions Guests may only be permitted to shoot under the personal supervision of a full member.
